Castle Leslie – Cinematic Wedding film

Delighted to have the opportunity to film this beautiful wedding at Castle Leslie during the summer. It is a fabulous location for a wedding and we love working here, and having the opportunity to produce really stunning cinematic wedding films at Castle Leslie.

We were absolutely delighted to be back at Castle Leslie last August to celebrate Thomasina and Alan’s fabulous wedding celebration. We really love working at this venue. The grounds are spectacular, the castle is absolutely stunning, the staff are fantastic, and every wedding we have worked here has been such an enjoyable experience from start to finish.

Thomasina and Alan’s wedding was no exception, and we were so delighted to capture all the wonderful moments of this day on film. Their first look moment outside by the lake was absolutely beautiful, and it was so lovely to capture these genuine emotions. We got fabulous aerial cinematography of the grounds and stunning footage of the couple enjoying a romantic moment amid the beautiful landscape later in the day. There was lovely music playing throughout the day, we loved how the room was decorated, and were so pleased to get such natural and candid footage of Alan and Thomasina with all their guests just enjoying their wonderful wedding day, and dancing the night away!

How much does a wedding videographer cost in Ireland?

The price of a wedding videographer will depend on a number of factors: the specific package and service being offered; the level of work and effort that will go into producing your treasured wedding films, the videographer’s experience and critically, their skillsets; the quality of the equipment; and any particular expenses associated with providing your wedding videography.

The price of a wedding videographer will depend on a number of factors: the specific package and service being offered; the level of work and effort that will go into producing your treasured wedding films, the videographer’s experience and critically, their skillsets; the quality of the equipment; and any particular expenses associated with providing your wedding videography.

Most professional wedding videographers in Ireland will charge somewhere between 2000 and 4000 EUR for a full day’s coverage and producing your wedding films, according to a survey by One Fab Day

Of course you can also find cheaper options, but the price is nearly always aligned with the quality of the wedding films you will receive and the level of professional experience and skill of your wedding videographer.

There are many costs associated with wedding videography – the cameras, lenses, tripods, microphones, drones and other audio-visual equipment used on the day can be very expensive – and of course the higher the quality the equipment (meaning the better your wedding films), the more they cost… Editing is also an intricate and delicate process, and it takes time to craft a wedding film into a visually beautiful film that showcases the best of the day and creates those wonderful emotions! It’s much more than just combining clips… Most videographers will have a range of editing software programmes they use to edit the films which are costly – not only for cutting and combining clips, but also colour grading, improving the quality of the image, removing anything unsightly, and adding all the magic touches. Music, online video storage platforms, external hard drives, websites and advertising, all come with additional costs!

Where you have a limited budget, and you’re unsure of whether to have a wedding videographer, or you have found someone you love, but your budget won’t stretch, we have a two pieces of advice.

The first thing we will say, and we cannot stress this enough: having a videographer is one of the best wedding-related decisions that you will make!! A wedding is a very rare opportunity to bring together your loved ones, your closest friends, from near and far. For many couples it can be one of the only occasions where extended family from different places will get together. For parents and grandparents it’s a cherished day to see their daughter, son, grandchild get married, and for the all the friends, well it’s just a fab opportunity to get together and have a wonderful night. As you get older, the memories of the day will fade, and having a video to look back – not only for you, but also for your future family, children, grandchildren, is a timeless treasure. We have heard so many times over years when speaking with couples ‘we are SO happy we decided to have the wedding videography’ – but NEVER the opposite. Unfortunately, we have also heard from various people ‘our biggest regret was not having a videographer’.

Secondly, if you really like a videographer, but they are slightly out of your budget, we’d recommend trying to stretch to accommodate the price, maybe by shifting other costs around somewhere else in your wedding budget. Your wedding film is one of the most important and lasting elements of your wedding day. Having an experienced videographer that you know you can rely on to craft a beautiful and highly professional wedding film, that showcases your day AND recreates those emotions every time you re-watch it in years to come, will be a decision that you don’t regret!

How to choose a Wedding Videographer?

Choosing a wedding videographer can sometimes be a daunting task. It’s one of the most special and important days of your life, and there are many suppliers on the market. You want to make sure you make the right choice!

Choosing a wedding videographer can sometimes be a daunting task. It’s one of the most special and important days of your life, and there are many suppliers on the market.

Our first piece of advice is to take time to do some research. Do a search online of several different wedding videographers - their websites and social media pages and focus initially on their portfolio. Instagram is usually a good place to start as this is where the most recent work will be. Try to identify what kind of style you are going for. Most wedding videographers nowadays will take a more cinematic approach, rather than documentary style  – but even within that, each videographer will have their own different style and technique. Some use black and white for example. Some prefer to focus almost exclusively on the couple without much footage of the guests, while others like to show off the couple and guests as well as footage of both the key moments and the parts the wedding couple may not have seen! Some like to really show the context with lots of images of the surroundings and nature. Some use funky upbeat music – others barely use music at all.

Watch a few different videos from each of the wedding videographer’s portfolio and try to get a feel for their style, as this is essentially what your wedding video will also look like.

Once you have an idea of the type of style you want, you can then narrow things down. One of the key things that will influence your decision is of course budget. Most videographers will prefer to discuss the price directly with you, rather than publishing on their website. This gives you both the opportunity to discuss tailored packages. In any discussion make sure you check for no ‘hidden extras’.

Other factors that can be helpful in your decision are reviews. There is no better advertising for any business than satisfied customers! Check for real reviews on Google, Facebook or other wedding supplier platforms, and also on their website.

Finally, it’s also nice to chat with potential videographers by phone – you can find out more about their approach and explain what you are looking for.

What makes a great Wedding Film?

One of the best ways that you can appreciate the cinematography of a wedding video, is by watching it while muting the volume. In this way, you can really notice how the video is filmed and made.

First of all, let’s explain, in the most simple way possible, what a video is! A video is a set of images – 25, 30, 60, etc. images per second. When shown together, these images give off the impression of movement. So essentially, the very simple definition of video is “moving images”.

So what does the idea of moving images have to do with a great wedding video? Here it’s important to understand, that a wedding video is more than just a recording… it’s a recording of thousands and thousands of images or ‘photos’ and as such, the photography or ‘cinematography’ of the images is one of the most important elements of a great wedding video.

The word ‘cinematography’ comes from Greek language, meaning ‘writing with motion’. It is the process of taking ideas, actions, words, emotions and other non-verbal communication, and rendering them in visual terms. Cinematography refers to how shots are framed, the colour, the texture, the camera angle, the lenses and focus, the composition.

One of the best ways that you can appreciate the cinematography of a wedding video, is by watching it while muting the volume. In this way, you can really notice how the video is filmed and made. You will be able to appreciate how the shots are framed, the composition, the light and colour, different camera angles and focus, and if they are charged with emotions, happiness, smiles, nostalgia. In this way, you will realise if you like the work of the wedding videographer.

Another thing that make a great wedding video is of course the footage itself.

  • Did the videographer capture all those key moments on the day – walking down the aisle, the first kiss, the celebrations of the family and guests before and after the ceremony?

  • Are the shots high quality?

  • Does the video showcase the couple, the family, the guests and the venue in the best way possible?

Audio is another really important factor in addition to the visual footage. Good audio is what will really bring out the emotions of the day. Whether it is a voice over of the groom or celebrant, a recording of the songs from the church or band, or backing music, audio used in a way that ignites emotions can really set a good wedding videographer apart from the rest.

Finally, how the wedding video is edited is extremely important. In a cinematic wedding film, the editing will be seamless, often non-chronological especially in the short highlights film – mixing up shots and audio from throughout the day in a way that’s creative and artistic, and in well-edited video you won’t notice abrupt cuts.

Wedding Videography Styles

Cinematic style on the other hand, is more sophisticated, creative, and artistic, than traditional wedding videography. A cinematic wedding videographer will place emphasis on telling the story of the wedding couple and their day by generating emotions, using different techniques

There are two principal styles used by wedding videographers: the traditional ‘documentary’ style, and ‘cinematic’.

Traditional, documentary style is normally a recording of the wedding exactly how it happens, in chronological order, using continuous shooting, and then usually edited into a long video with few cuts. They often show the entire mass and speeches, and the editing style is generally quite simple. There is less creativity involved in the filming and editing. The role of the ‘traditional’ wedding videographer is more to document the day. The videographer will usually be unobtrusive, working in the background.

Cinematic style on the other hand, is more sophisticated, creative, and artistic, than traditional wedding videography. A cinematic wedding videographer will place emphasis on telling the story of the wedding couple and their day by generating emotions, using different techniques with natural or available light, rhythm, camera focus, different angles, framing and composition, music and often non-chronological editing especially in the short highlights film. A cinematic wedding videographer will usually have a technical eye for cinematography. Shots are normally short – some even less than five seconds – which are then edited together in a way that really brings out emotions of nostalgia, happiness, love. The editing process is complex but it allows the wedding filmmaker to really showcase the day in a creative manner. Cinematic videographers will often be unobtrusive also, with the aim of capturing cinematic shots in the most natural manner.

One style is not necessarily better than the other – it’s totally up to each couple what they prefer and what they want to have recorded and be able to watch again in the future.

At Sunset Films, we prefer a cinematic approach because for us it’s all about storytelling through natural emotions. It’s all about the love and creating and rekindling memories which will last forever, through emotion and creativity. For us wedding videography is an art – what we like to refer to as ‘wedding cinematography’.
